Amberlough dossier series5/10/2023 ![]() ![]() Its citizens, still angry and thirsting for justice-or at least revenge-must find a way to sweep away the rubble and rebuild their country from the ruins that remain.Ī tall order for the characters… and for the author behind them.īut long before the restructuring of Gedda in Amnesty, before the violent revolution of Armistice, and even before the fascist takeover in Amberlough, Donnelly faced an even taller order: building the world of her series from scratch. Set nearly a decade after Amberlough, after Cyril DePaul tipped over the first domino that led to the rise of a brutal fascist government-and five years since Armistice, since violent resistance to that government began in earnest- Amnesty, the conclusion to Lara Elena Donnelly’s Amberlough Dossier, answers an often-ignored question: What happens once the revolution is over?įor Gedda, the fictional country that serves as a backdrop for much of Donnelly’s trilogy, the days of train track bombings and assassinations are over, but not forgotten. ![]() ![]() » By entering, you are confirming that you are 13 or older, and giving the admin (Dhonielle Clayton) permission to contact you via email and mail you your prize(s) » Pre-order campaign is open internationally to readers 13+ » For a valid entry, the official “ The Belles Pre-order Campaign” form must be successfully completed AND proof-of-purchase must be emailed to the admin (Dhonielle Clayton) at by 11:59PM EST on February 6, 2018 ![]() » Any North American edition of The Belles (hardcover ISBN 978-1484728499 or e-book ISBN B071XNWRHC) purchased by 11:59PM EST on February 6th, 2018 qualifies for the pre-order campaign ![]() The crime of miss jean brodie5/9/2023 ![]() The time-shifting is cleverly done – the whole book sparkles with intelligence, in fact – giving layers of depth to what fundamentally is a rather slight little story of one of the many “surplus” women left single after the huge loss of young men in WW1. Spark plays around with time, taking us back to the girls’ first introduction to Miss Brodie as ten-year-olds, and then forwards to what feels like the present of the book, in the late ’30s when the girls are almost grown-up and then forward again, often telling us the girls’ future as a way of shedding light on their personalities in the now. The book gets off to an excellent start, introducing us first to the girls in the Brodie set. But that doesn’t mean she has to live the life of a nun… She would never marry, she declares, since she is too devoted to her girls. Under cover of teaching them history, she instead tells them the story of her lost love, Hugh, who died in the First World War, and of the joys of being a woman in her prime. The people she confides in most are a group of girls who were once in her class and whom she singled out as her girls – the Brodie set. ![]() As she repeatedly tells anyone who will listen, she is in her prime. ![]() Miss Brodie is a teacher at the Marcia Blaine School for Girls in the years between the wars. I smiled when I saw a request for Clay Johnson on my list, one of the easiest players to coach in the art of media relations. I’d earned my spot here, just like these players would fight for their spots on the team this season.Ĭonfidence, I hoped, would come with time.
